Cubs aim to qualify for U-17 Afcon Zonal semis

The Uganda under-17 football team, the Cubs, is a win away from the semifinals of the Under-17 AFCON zonal qualifiers after registering back to back victories against South Sudan and Kenya in Tanzania.

Despite losing three players before the start of the tournament because of a failed MRI test, the Cubs managed to redeem themselves at the 2019 AFCON qualifiers in Tanzania.

After a 1-0 scare at the hands of the Ethiopians, Peter Onen’s troops responded with a domineering 6-1 victory over South Sudan and later a 3-1 win over neighbours Kenya.

After their last training on Tuesday ahead of tomorrow’s game against Djibouti at Chamazi stadium, Cubs tactician Peter Onen said they will take the game seriously because its going to be a turning point for their campaign.

He said: “With the three matches we have played so far, the boys are very confident. Tomorrow's match in Djibouti is so determinant because it’s another turning point. We have to approach it as our last match because  if we don’t don’t win it then that’s the end of the road for us. We have to play whole heartedly because  mathematics reads we have to score more goals .

The Cubs currently lie second on the group B five team log with six points, three a drift leaders Ethiopia.

The winner in the CECAFA/AFCON Under-17 qualifiers will feature in next year’s Africa Cup in Tanzania in May.
