PARLIAMENT | Nabilatuk Woman legislator Sylvia Vicky Awas is concerned that hundreds of people in her home district are counting losses after raging floods swept away homes, gardens and livestock.

MP Awas says as the leadership of the district prepares a report about the gravity of the crisis, the Office of the Prime Minister should urgently intervene as the situation is getting out of hand.

According to MP Awas, the most affected parishes are Kamaturu and Nathinyonoit in Lorengedwat Subcounty, Kothike and Nakayoit in Kasike Subcounty, Arengesiep in Nabilatuk Subcounty, and Lokaala in Nabilatuk Subcounty.

"With the information I have received from both the Chief Administrative Officer of Nabilatuk and from the people on the ground, for the last two days, over 300 goats have been swept away by raging floods," Awas said.

"The district is compiling a report on the gravity of the problem, but we should not wait for the report - swing into action to save the people's lives."

According to the MP, it's not only Nabilatuk that has been affected by the floods but also other districts in Karamoja - including Amudat.

"However, it's good that no report of death of people has been reported in these affected areas," MP Awas revealed.

After Dubai in the United Arab Emirates was reduced to a mini-sea about two weeks ago, the warning signs for the Tropical Africa were clear.

Since then the rains have pounded the region, with hundreds dead in Kenya and Tanzania in the last one week.

Uganda is on high alert over potential devastating floods with the news from MP Aswa suggesting the need for immediate prepared and relief mobilisation.
