Rubanda voters turn heat on Mbabazi over Shs400m 'service award'

A group of Rubanda residents have turned on their district woman MP Prossy Mbabazi Akampurira the Shs400 million "service award" she received as a parliamentary commissioner.

Until the new development, Mbabazi, Solomon Silwany (Bukooli County - NRM), and Esther Afoyochan (Zombo District Woman - NRM) were a giant umbrella of zero scrutiny especially from their ruling party.

Former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga received all the flak for the Shs500m he negotiated on May 6, 2022.

But now the voters of Rubanda appear to have decided to touch the political dial in Ms Mbabazi's face with the wrath of an angry taxpayer.

The angry residents expressed their emotions on a protest, displaying placards bearing their feelings.

"You shamed us," one said. "Return the money," implored another. And "Bakiga don't steal," screamed the other.

Reports indicate that on May 6, 2022, Mathias Mpuuga, then Leader of the Opposition participated in a Parliamentary Commission session chaired by Speaker Anita Among.

During the meeting, considerations were made regarding certain benefits for the LoP and Backbench Commissioners.

Mpuuga, along with fellow commissioners Silwany, Afoyochan, and Mbabazi endorsed the 'service award,' which also allocated Shs400 million to backbench commissioners.

These details recently emerged in a widely circulated parliamentary exposé, sparking outrage among Ugandans.

Now, predominantly members of the Rubanda Farmers Association, the residents that include Agatha Kyatuheure and Martin Byakama expressed disappointment that their MP was involved in such a scandal while neglecting various challenges in the constituency.

"Ever since we voted Hon.Prossy to become our leader,we as traders at Hamurwa daily market we have never received any services from her and yet during campaigns,she promised us heaven and earth," the residents say.

"To our surprise we heard news on radios that our MP got money from sources we can not explain,we request her to take back that evil money from wherever she got it from."

The angry residents demand that she either return the money to the national treasury or allocate it to the constituency for development purposes.

The Nile Post attempted to to reach the legislator through a phone call for comment on these allegations were unsuccessful as she did not respond to repeated calls.
