The Chief Opposition Whip in the Parliament, John Baptist Nambeshe has said religious leaders have failed the citizens by keeping silent on “ills” committed by the ruling government.

He made the remarks as opposition leaders under the United Forces of Change, met religious leaders under their umbrella, the Inter Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU).

Nambeshe, said most of Ugandan religious leaders have sold their birthright for favours hence failing to speak out against the government’s “injustices”.

“Though regarded as conscience of society, they (religious leaders) cannot come out to admonish Mr Museveni and his government.” Nambeshe said.

He urged them to be advocates of justice, fairness, truth, constitutionalism, rule of law and good governance in the country.

“This is because fairness, equity and respect for the rights of others are fundamental to peace and stability. Religious leaders at all levels must strive to promote those virtues without fear or favour.” the opposition whip said.

He further implored religious leaders to emulate the late Archbishop Janan Luwum and proclaim the truth in the public square.

“The Inter Religious Council of Uganda must enhance its credibility, both real and perceived, as this is absolutely essential to mediation. Religious leaders must present themselves in a way that shows high moral standards by speaking up against the ills committed by the NRA government.”

The meeting, chaired by Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu of the Church of Uganda, aimed at resolving differences between the two parties.

Archbishop Kaziimba expressed the IRCU’s commitment to ensuring that all Ugandans receive equal attention, adding that the council has established proper guidelines to ensure smooth coordination with the opposition.

"If they (opposition) have anything to discuss, our secretariat and the secretary general are here to ensure coordination, as they have done this time," he said
