As the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) loom for the primary seven candidates in Rakai District, concerns over their future have reached a critical point. With just 1,200 students out of 5,000 securing spots in secondary schools in 2018, the district's education landscape faces an alarming challenge.

One of the primary contributors to this crisis is the severe shortage of secondary schools in Rakai, with only fourteen schools struggling to accommodate the increasing number of primary school graduates.

The resulting overcrowding has created subpar learning conditions, with insufficient resources and facilities, according to Ssemutono Steven, the Rakai District Education Officer.

Ssemutono further highlighted the issue of long travel distances that students must endure to access these limited secondary schools. Many children are forced to embark on daily journeys covering several kilometres to reach their schools, not only placing a physical burden on them but also robbing valuable learning time.

Moreover, the students who manage to access secondary education face the challenge of teacher absenteeism and a limited number of educators. This leads to irregular class schedules and a lack of guidance for the students, ultimately affecting their educational opportunities.

Ssemutono pointed out the dire teacher shortages in schools like Kakabajjo Secondary School, Kimuli Secondary, and St. Bernards Manya. These schools have far fewer teachers than required, resulting in poor performance and diminished educational experiences for the students.

In response to these critical issues, Ssemutono has called upon the government to collaborate in improving the educational landscape in Rakai District. Investments in building additional secondary schools, providing transportation options, and ensuring teacher attendance are essential steps to ensure that the dreams of primary seven candidates are not shattered by systemic challenges.

"The hopes and aspirations of these young students should not be compromised by the challenges they face in pursuing further education," Ssemutono emphasized.

"It is now the responsibility of all concerned parties to take immediate action to rectify these issues and ensure that every child in Rakai has an equal opportunity to receive a quality education and unlock their full potential." He added.
