Rally driver Lwakataka sues IGP Ochola to return his gun

Rally driver Ponsiano Lwakataka has dragged the Inspector General of Police John Martin Okoth-Ochola to court seeking orders to compel him and Uganda Police Force (UPF) to return his pistol taken away from him during investigations into murder charges.

Lwakataka was last year arrested and detained in Masaka before his gun was confiscated from him but High Court judge Eudes Katirima later acquitted him of murder charges.

However, in a suit filed before the High Court, the controversial driver says he acquired his gun through rightful channels and that he was dully paying taxes for it since 2001.

He argues that without hearing his side about the alleged misusing the firearm, the former Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura ordered for the confiscation of his pistol.

Lwakataka contends that during police investigations in which he was accused of being behind the murder of a family of nine people in Rakai, it was established that he never misused the pistol in the alleged murder.

He now wants court to issue an order directing IGP Ochola to quickly return his pistol.

Recently, Ochola issued orders stopping issuing of guns to private individuals.
