As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) prepares to mark 37 years of liberation, the Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga has decried the high poverty rates and poor service delivery in Kiboga district.
Mpuuga who is also the National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president in-charge of Buganda made the remarks shortly after opening the party coordination office at Kibiga Sub-County in Kiboga district.
Mpuuga who was taken to different parts of the district by the areas leaders observed that the poverty levels in this district is sickening with the majority of the people not having access to the basics of life.
“I came face-to-face with what the regime didn’t want us to see. While the rest of Uganda has suffered with the NRM occupation for 37 years, Kiboga and Luwero triangle generally have had the dictatorship for 42 years. The poverty levels there are sickening,” said Mpuuga.
He explained that the level of poverty in the district is terrible and it represents the real picture of this country, adding that it seems the people in this area have been totally forsaken.
“This regime is responsible for all that you are going through. In the run-up to the bloody 2021 elections, our President (Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine) was not allowed to campaign in Kiboga. The police and the military in their full show of brute force didn't allow us to connect freely with the people of Kiboga,” he said.
Mpuuga called on the people of Kiboga to embrace the cause for change, urging them to come out and express their grievances towards the regime rather than keeping quiet and yet they greatly helped to bring it into power.
He also urged leaders within the opposition ranks to stop the intrigues and in-fighting but unite to take forward their campaign to cause change in the country's leadership.
Kiboga Woman MP Christine Kaaya Nakimwero who is also the Shadow Minister for Water and Environment said the poverty levels in the district are worsening and no tangible remedies have been tabled so the people can improve their lives.
On January 26, Uganda will celebrate 37 years of liberation, a national holiday that marks the occasion when NRM captured power from Tito Okello Lutwa government. Yoweri Museveni was consequently sworn in as president of the republic.
But opposition leaders claimed Uganda has been plagued by insecurity and poverty due to the bad governance.
