Parliament unveils team to assess Covid-19 response
Abdu Katuntu will head the team

The deputy Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among has instituted a 40 member team to carry out a countrywide assessment on how the government is handling and mitigating the Covid-19 pandemic.

The team is expected to table a report on the floor of Parliament in two weeks and will be headed by Bugweri County MP, Abdu Katuntu.

"The parliamentary Covid-19 task force shall comprise regional teams whose responsibility shall be to oversee the Covid-19 response intervention. The team going out should assess the health impact of Covid-19 in the communities and the country at large," she said.

Among said the team will have to assess the private sector’s role in the Covid-19 pandemic noting that some elements within the private sector have taken advantage of this situation. She said the team will also find out how the private sector can be supported.

"The Parliamentary team should also sensitise the communities through media about Covid-19. They should prepare and submit a report to Parliament. As Parliament, we are concerned about the people and join the executive in promoting their wellbeing,"she said.

She used the occasion to dispel reports that Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah was gravely ill.

"The country voted for a speaker and deputy speaker. We agreed that each of us should work for two months, and I started. After my two months, I will also go and rest and the speaker will come. There's no problem with the speaker. He is fine," she said.
