In a united show of service and commitment to public health, the Rotaract Clubs of Kigo Seven Lakes Golf, Upper Kololo, and Victoria University came together to commemorate Child and Maternal Health Month through the Katwe Immunisation and Blood Donation Drive. This impactful initiative, conducted in partnership with Mengo Hospital Blood Bank, was hosted at Zaam Medical Center in Katwe, Kampala.
The drive aimed to increase immunisation coverage and boost Uganda’s blood supply through voluntary donations. It provided free immunisation to 102 children headed by Rtn Cynthia Baitwa, the District Polio Officer, protecting them against life-threatening diseases such as polio and measles. Additionally, 50 units of safe blood were collected—enough to potentially save up to 150 lives, including mothers, accident victims, and patients in need of surgery.
The event also featured HIV testing, health education, and community sensitisation, all geared toward promoting preventive healthcare and stronger community health systems. Under the powerful theme "We want a Polio-Free World," the campaign reinforced Rotary’s global End Polio Now mission and the broader commitment to safeguarding child and maternal health.
Led by President Louis Shamim of RAC Kigo Seven Lakes Golf, President Tumusiime Godfrey of RAC Upper Kololo, and President Marvin Mujungu of RAC Victoria University, the project highlighted the power of partnerships and community engagement in delivering impactful change.
The impact of the initiative will continue well beyond its conclusion. The immunised children are now better protected, contributing to reduced disease outbreaks and improved childhood development. The blood units collected will support hospitals in delivering life-saving care. Furthermore, the awareness raised during the drive has sparked a shift toward sustained health-seeking behavior and greater community participation in future health initiatives.
The Katwe drive stands as a shining example of how Rotary’s values of service and collaboration can lead to real, lasting impact.
