At least 2,000 students in Mpigi District have benefited from scholastic materials and bursaries under an education support initiative spearheaded by the Woman Member of Parliament-elect, Teddy Nambooze.
Speaking to beneficiaries at her office, Nambooze urged students to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to their studies, stressing that education remains the most reliable path to personal growth and community transformation.
The support package included exercise books, mathematical sets, pens, and other essential learning materials.
Bursaries were also awarded to top-performing students from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them to continue or complete their education.
“I want to first thank the people of Mpigi for the trust you placed in me during the elections. Everyone contributed in their own way, whether by voting or mobilising others. You chose the right leader, and may God bless you for that,” Nambooze said.
She noted that the programme, dubbed “Tereza Mpigi nga Osomesa Omwana mu Busobozi Bwo” (Support Mpigi by Educating a Child Within Your Means), has been running for six years.
Over this period, it has enabled many children from underprivileged families to return to school or complete their education.
“This initiative has helped many children whose parents could not afford school fees. Some are still studying, others have completed their education, and many have benefited from scholastic support,” she added.
Nambooze also appealed to parents to take an active role in their children’s education by monitoring their academic progress and behaviour.
“If I pay school fees for your child, make time to visit the school, talk to them, and guide them on how to behave as responsible citizens in today’s Uganda,” she said.
Addressing the students directly, Nambooze warned against indiscipline and poor decision-making, stressing that self-control is key to academic success.
“I have given you these materials so that you can study. Do not reach school and abandon the very reason you went there. Leadership tomorrow depends on you. If you fail in school, you fail your community and those who depend on you,” she cautioned.
She further encouraged girls who became pregnant while in school not to lose hope, revealing that her office has established a vocational skills training centre to support them.
“I know some of our girls got pregnant while at school, others during the recent holidays. Do not be discouraged. Come to my office — we have set up a skills training centre where you can learn practical skills and earn a living,” Nambooze said.
Parents of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Hon. Nambooze for her continued commitment to education in the district.
“We sincerely thank Honourable Teddy Nambooze for standing with us. She has educated our children, provided scholastic materials, and returned those who had dropped out due to lack of school fees back to school. Even girls who became pregnant were supported with vocational skills training. We are truly grateful,” they said.
This marks Teddy Nambooze’s second term as Woman Member of Parliament for Mpigi District, having first served before being re-elected by the people of Mpigi in recognition of her service.
