Fact-Check: Gov’t Dismisses Claims of New Electoral Commission Appointments

By | January 2, 2025

The government has dismissed a social media report claiming that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. Justice Yorokamu Bamwine as the new chairperson of the Electoral Commission, deputized by Hon. Syda Bbumba.

In a statement issued by Hajji Faruk Kirunda, the Deputy Press Secretary to President Kaguta Museveni, the public was urged to disregard the circulating information as baseless and false.

“The General Public is called upon to regard as FAKE NEWS the social media story indicating that President Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. Justice Yorokamu Bamwine to head the Electoral Commission, and to be deputized by Hon. Syda Bbumba. In case of such appointments, you will be informed through the right channels. Thank you!”, he posted on his X channel.

The statement further emphasized the importance of relying on official government communication channels for accurate and verified updates on key appointments or changes in public offices.

The clarification comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of fake news on social media platforms, which often misleads the public and undermines trust in official communication.

Government authorities have reiterated their commitment to keeping the public informed about significant decisions and have encouraged citizens to verify any news before sharing or believing it.

As of now, no changes to the leadership of the Electoral Commission have been announced, and all appointments will follow due procedure with official communication through credible platforms
