Kigozi Nominated to Represent Older Persons in Kawempe, Vows to Push for Bigger Grants
Daniel Mayombo Kigozi, nominated to contest as councilor for older persons in Kawempe Division, has pledged to fight for better healthcare access and a substantial increase in monthly government grants for the elderly.

Daniel Mayombo Kigozi has been nominated to contest as councilor for older persons in Kawempe Division Urban Council, promising to champion the rights and welfare of the elderly.

Speaking shortly after his nomination, Kigozi noted that Kawempe is home to an estimated 15,000 older persons out of a population of about 480,000, many of whom struggle to access health care and financial support.

He highlighted that elderly residents often endure long queues at government health facilities, including Komamboga and Kawempe hospitals, only to leave without treatment or medication.

“It is my duty to advocate for older persons to receive priority health services, including physiotherapy, and to push for the establishment of a drop-in center where they can access care and relaxation,” Kigozi said.

The aspiring councilor also criticized the current government support grant of Shs25,000 for persons aged 80 years and above, calling it insufficient, particularly in Kampala where living costs are high.

“Twenty-five thousand shillings in Kampala can only buy about a kilo and a half of meat. We want the grant increased to at least Shs100,000 per month and the eligibility age lowered from 80 to 65 years,” he argued.

Kigozi added that enhancing financial support for older persons would enable them to run small household businesses and live more dignified lives after retirement.
