Environment experts from Africa and Europe are in Kampala for three days to discuss strategies to implement a government policy on waste management especially plastics.
The conference dubbed Circular Economy is organised by Uganda Association for Impact Assessment and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
Speaking at the opening of the conference, Onesmus Muhwezi, the energy team leader at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country office, has noted that plastics are still a big challenge for both land and water environment.
Muhwezi noted with concern the unplanned urbanization rate in Uganda saying that the potential to achieve circular economy in such kind of urbanization is a big challenge Onesmus added.
Environmentalists want manufacturers to embrace a circular economy strategy which provides for continuous reuse of products and reduction of waste which harms the environment.
They say it’s high time the country made all recycling measures a daily discussion or harmful waste will soon occupy land and water which are meant to be a habitat for useful living organs.
This was during a regional conference for the Association of Impact Assessors here in Kampala aimed at laying strategies to protect the environment.
