NDA Targets Schools in Renewed Push Against Youth Drug Abuse

The National Drug Authority has launched a new awareness campaign aimed at combating drug abuse among young people by empowering students to take a leading role in prevention efforts.

The initiative, which was rolled out in Mityana District at MUMSA High School, seeks to position school-going children as ambassadors in the fight against substance abuse. Authorities say the programme was introduced in response to growing concern over the rising number of youth affected by drug use in the area.

Speaking at the launch, Buganda Kingdom’s Minister for Local Government, Joseph Kawuki, expressed concern about increasing cases of drug abuse among young people, particularly those aged between 12 and 22.

“It is worrying that many young people are being drawn into drug use at an early age, and in many cases, some have already dropped out of school,” he said.

Kawuki noted that many individuals turn to drugs as a coping mechanism when faced with life challenges, a decision he said often worsens their situation.

“Some people believe that using drugs can help them escape their problems, but in reality, it creates even bigger challenges,” he added.

He urged students to remain focused on their education and resist peer pressure that could lead them into harmful behaviours.

“Stay disciplined and avoid groups that promote drug use. Your future depends on the choices you make today,” he advised.

Representing the National Drug Authority, Fred Kabuye Kalungi educated students on the dangers associated with substance abuse, noting that the problem is particularly prevalent among youth in Mityana.

“We chose to start this campaign here because the district is among those most affected. Our goal is to equip students with knowledge so they can protect themselves and influence others positively,” he explained.

Students who participated in the session welcomed the initiative, saying it had increased their awareness of the risks of drug abuse and the importance of making informed decisions.

“This programme has helped us understand the dangers of drugs, and we are ready to share this knowledge with our peers,” one student said.

Officials believe that by directly involving young people, the campaign will create a ripple effect within communities, helping to reduce drug abuse and promote healthier lifestyles among the youth.
