Uganda has earned international recognition after being selected among a small group of countries honoured at the Islamic University of Madinah Distinguished Alumni Awards (Fifth Edition, 1447 AH / 2026).

The award was presented during the 62nd graduation ceremony of the Islamic University of Madinah held on April 27, 2026, under the patronage of Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Governor of the Al-Madinah Region.

Uganda’s recognition comes through Ambassador Dr. Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, currently serving as Uganda’s envoy to Sudan, who received the Social Impact Award. The accolade honours alumni who have made significant contributions to society through community service, volunteerism, and humanitarian work.

Dr. Ssemuddu was selected from a pool of more than 150,000 alumni, in recognition of his academic excellence, community engagement, and efforts in promoting social and charitable initiatives, as well as representing the university globally.

Other countries recognised in this year’s awards include France, United Kingdom, Philippines, Suriname and São Tomé and Príncipe.

The awards also featured categories such as Professional Achievement and Sustainable Development, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Scientific Impact, and Intellectual Awareness.

Officials say the recognition highlights Uganda’s growing presence in scholarship, diplomacy, and humanitarian service.

Dr. Ssemuddu has been widely acknowledged for his diplomatic work and for advancing educational and social causes both in Uganda and internationally.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described the award as a reflection of national excellence and Uganda’s increasing global standing in leadership and service.
