Kalungu East Member of Parliament-elect Yusuf Jr Kiruluuta Nkeretanyi has sparked debate after stating that he does not intend to actively engage in parliamentary work, arguing that meaningful service to his constituents depends on a change in national leadership.
Nkeretanyi, who belongs to the National Unity Platform (NUP), made the remarks during an appearance on Sanyuka Morning Xpress on Wednesday.
“People from Kalungu don’t really have an MP; I’m just a representative. I’m not going to do anything in Parliament,” he said.
He criticised the current government for what he described as a tendency to blame legislators for its failures.
“The government blames Members of Parliament every time it fails the people,” he added.
Nkeretanyi said his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises and fully representing the people of Kalungu East would be realised under a different political administration, specifically if Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu—popularly known as Bobi Wine—assumes power.
“If we enter a new Uganda, my people of Kalungu should be rest assured that I will do what I promised and speak for them,” he said.
He also reflected on governance and leadership, emphasising the importance of listening in decision-making processes.
“Listening and hearing are different—when you listen, you understand. But the government does not listen,” Nkeretanyi said.
He added that while opposition is necessary in a democracy, it should not be absolute.
“We shouldn’t oppose everything, but we also cannot allow everything that is happening,” he noted.
In the January 15, 2026 parliamentary election, Nkeretanyi secured victory in Kalungu East with 15,473 votes, defeating former Defence Minister Vincent Ssempijja, who polled 13,219 votes.
Other candidates in the race included Francis Katabazi (Independent), Katongole Deogratious, Irene Nanyazi, Mathias Kintu, and Democratic Party’s Asuman Kabonge.
