The County Chief of Busujju County, Israel Lubega Maaso, has called upon parents to refrain from spending excessive money on extravagant celebrations for students who have completed their Senior Six (S.6) examinations.
Lubega emphasized that such spending has significantly contributed to financial strain among many families, leaving them unable to afford tuition fees for their children’s continued education at higher institutions.
He noted that funds which would otherwise support academic advancement are often depleted during these celebratory events.
“Many parents are failing to pay school fees for higher education because the money is spent on celebrations,” he said.
The appeal was made as part of his ongoing tour of secondary schools within the region, aimed at strengthening and promoting various kingdom initiatives.
Among the key priorities highlighted during his visits are encouraging school proprietors to adopt the Buganda Kingdom bursary program, mobilizing student participation in the Kabaka’s birthday run through the purchase of kits, strengthening Nkobazambogo clubs in schools, and urging institutions to fully implement the new national curriculum.
Some of the schools visited during this outreach include St. Thereza Secondary School Zigoti, Mityana Standard Kagavu, Mityana Highway Zigoti, and Mityana Hillside Secondary School, among others.
Students and school administrators expressed their appreciation to the Buganda Kingdom for this initiative, noting that such engagements not only inspire learners to take their studies seriously but also provide access to bursaries that support their educational journey.
