"Today is the day we take a step toward safer roads. This is not just about walking but about starting a journey to rethink our road safety measures. Are we making our roads safe? Are we doing enough to save lives?" he asked.

According to Uganda Police reports, an average of 14 people lose their lives daily due to road crashes, primarily caused by speeding, reckless driving, and distracted driving.

Beyanga noted that these accidents are preventable if road users take responsibility for their actions.

"Every day, 14 lives are lost due to road crashes. I hope that today, those 14 people will go back home safely. The key causes are speeding, reckless driving, and distractions. If we take personal responsibility, we can reduce these numbers," he urged.

While acknowledging challenges such as potholes and poor road infrastructure, he stressed that the focus should be on individual responsibility.

“Our roads may have challenges, but we must address the issues within ourselves first. Let’s stop the madness. If we drove carefully, paid full attention while driving, and avoided distractions like using mobile phones, we could significantly reduce road carnage,” he added.

Beyanga also commended the Ministry of Works and Transport for introducing new speed limits but called for stricter enforcement to ensure compliance.

Minister Fred Byamukama hailed the initiative, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility among all road users, including pedestrians.

"This is not just about drivers. Pedestrians must also respect the road. Before crossing, look both ways. Some drivers may be dealing with personal challenges that affect their attention. We all need to be mindful of each other," he cautioned.

The minister further noted that road crashes not only cause grief but also exacerbate poverty by breaking families apart. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the Joe Walker Foundation in achieving its road safety awareness goals.

The 10-day journey will take the walkers through various towns, including Bombo, Luwero, Nakasongola, Migyera, Kafu, Kigumba, Bweyale, Kamdini, Bobi, and finally, Gulu. At each stop, participants will engage with local communities, educating them on safe road practices and encouraging responsible behavior among drivers and pedestrians.

Today's journey commenced at 6:00 AM from Sheraton Hotel, with the first stop in Bombo. The road safety message will be spread throughout the route, ensuring that more people become aware of their role in making Uganda’s roads safer for all.
