Former State Minister for Bunyoro Affairs, Ernest Kiiza, has urged journalists in Masindi, under the Greater Masindi Practitioners Association, to supplement their income by engaging in side businesses and farming.

Kiiza shared this advice during the association’s leadership transition, where Stephen Wandera and his executive team handed over to the new president, Jotham Gucwaki, who will lead for the next two years.

Speaking at the event, Kiiza acknowledged that many media practitioners earn modest salaries and encouraged them to diversify their income sources.

“I’m well aware of the low pay in this profession, as I own a radio station. I recommend using whatever you earn to start small businesses or venture into farming. With these additional ventures, you can improve your lives,” he advised.

Kiiza also emphasised the importance of maintaining professional ethics and integrity. “Even with low pay, uphold your ethics and build a strong reputation, as this can open up future financial opportunities.

Be ambitious; if you work on radio, aim for TV. If you’re on local TV, set your sights on international platforms,” he encouraged.

Rodgers Byamukama, association patron and FUFA executive member, advised the new leadership to set realistic goals and encourage colleagues to further their education.

“Setting achievable targets is important. Additionally, supporting members in advancing their studies can lead to professional growth,” Byamukama urged, highlighting the importance of qualifications beyond certificates and diplomas.

Outgoing president Stephen Wandera encouraged the incoming team to build on the association’s accomplishments and explore ways to improve financial stability.

“We’ve made progress, but there’s room to enhance our financial standing. Working with stakeholders to find new funding avenues could help,” Wandera said.

Newly elected president Jotham Gucwaki pledged to foster collaboration with all district institutions, including the police and local government offices.

“We will work to strengthen relationships across the district, and we aim to ensure our members benefit from government programs. By the end of my term, I hope our journalists will be better off, with improved personal assets and professional standards,” he said.

The Greater Masindi Practitioners Association, established in 2015, was created to bring together media professionals from the region, fostering collaboration and professional growth.
