In an interview with the Nile Post, the recently appointed head of the newly created anti-corruption unit James Tweheyo has revealed that he learned of his appointment from the state of the nation address.
Tweheyo said that he has no idea on what awaits him when he takes charge of the unit. He said that he is not aware of what exactly he will do as he has not received the terms of reference nor his job description.
Tweheyo said that, “I am yet to meet the appointing authority and discuss that.” Tweheyo’s appointment to the unit was announced by President Yoweri Museveni on June 07, 2018.
However, Tweheyo said that there is a general impression of the pervasiveness of corruption in Uganda and there is urgent need for work to be done to root out.
Tweheyo believes that the unit will work to supplement the work of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) headed by Justice Irene Mulyagonja. He said it is wrong to think the unit will work parallel to the IGG. Instead, Tweheyo argued, the president is only putting in every effort to buttress the effort of everyone fighting corruption.
Tweheyo added that the IGG’s office will always be needed to handle all the hurdles that come with the fight against corruption.

James Tweheyo, the former secretary general Uganda teachers Union, during his tenure at the union fiercely advocated for the betterment of the teachers lives. However after his contract expired it was never renewed.
