The ruling NRM party on Thursday hosted the Muslim community to an Iftar dinner and Duwa prayers at the party headquarters in Kampala.
Speaking at the function, the NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong said the party welcomes people of all walks of life.
“We thought of organizing this dinner to cement our relationship and open our doors more to welcoming you to our party. NRM is a party that is all inclusive. We don’t segregate, point fingers or blackmail but embrace peace and unity,” Todwong said.
He noted by organizing the Iftar dinner but also Duwa prayers, the ruling party aims at bringing the Muslim faithful closer.
Fight poverty
Todwong didn’t leave the podium without emphasizing the message of the party national chairman, President Museveni of fighting poverty.
The NRM Secretary General urged the Muslim leaders to play a leading role in the fight against poverty.
“Government will provide security but the fight against poverty goes down to individuals. Where there is poverty, there is no peace. Poverty is enemy of everybody regardless of our religion and political affiliations. We need to fight household poverty and this will translate into the peace we want. The challenges we have in our families mostly stem from poverty. If families are peaceful, it will trickle down to peace in the country.”
The NRM national Vice chairman, Hajji Moses Kigongo urged the Muslim faithful to continue with the good deeds they have exhibited even after the holy month of Ramathan ends.
The Deputy Mufti Sheikh Abdalla Ssemambo applauded the ruling NRM party for organising the Iftar dinner as a sign love and cooperation with Muslims.
“It is a symbol of generosity and mutual cooperation between us. This dinner is a symbol of generosity and mutual cooperation. I am sure Allah will continue to bless your efforts in steering the affairs of this country. Your close association with Muslims around the country is commendable. I would urge NRM government to continue appreciating our stake as Muslims,” Sheikh Ssemambo said.
