Police in Mubende District have arrested a man posing as a doctor at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital.
The suspect, identified as Frank Kyalimpa, allegedly extorted money from patients while masquerading as hospital staff.
Senior Hospital Administrator Onesimus Kibaya said the hospital had received multiple complaints from patients and caregivers about Kyalimpa’s activities, prompting an internal investigation.
According to Kibaya, CCTV cameras installed in various parts of the hospital captured Kyalimpa entering wards at night after official rounds, wearing a clinical coat and administering medication to patients.
Following the review of the footage, staff traced and arrested him within the hospital premises, still dressed in a clinical coat.
He was allegedly found altering patient prescriptions, discharging patients without authorisation, and directing them to buy drugs from him.
A search revealed folded cash in different pockets of his coat, along with several types of medicine.
Kibaya said Kyalimpa attempted to bribe him to settle the matter, and his bank records indicated transactions amounting to over Shs4 million.
Kyalimpa also presented a Kampala International University (KIU) identity card claiming he was an intern doctor, but the university denied any record of him.
Kibaya condemned the suspect’s actions, saying they had damaged the hospital’s reputation and fuelled public mistrust of genuine medical staff.
One patient, Micheal Ssenyonjo, accused Kyalimpa of taking Shs150,000 from him under the pretext of buying medicine for his wife but never delivering it.
Kyalimpa is currently detained at Mubende Central Police Station pending further investigations. Police had not issued an official statement by press time.
