The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament is concerned that mortality rate at Mulago specialized Women and Neonatal hospital is alarming inspite  the hospital being a specialized facility.

In the interface between the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament and officials from Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital, the committee discovered that a number of new born babies continue to lose lives in spite of the hospital being specialized.

"We have been told that the sterilization machine broke down, out of the 12 ventilators at the Hospital only two are functional and this could be the cause of this mortality rate at this specialized hospital," Muwanga Kivumbi, the chairperson of the committee said.

"The hospital charges exorbitant costs, but how come that services are not satisfactory. there must be a big problem that government should find out."

According to Kivumbi, in  July 2023, 26 new born babies lost their lives,  34 in August , 22 in October , 21 in November  and 18 babies died in  December last year at the hopsital.

In the month of January 2024, 10 new born babies died, 21 in February, 17 in  March 17 and 21 have so far died in May

"It's also surprising that the dialysis machine that was procured at a cost of  shs640 million  in the financial year 2022/2023 has up-to now  not been installed for use,"  Kivumbi affirmed

In this meeting, the accountant of the Hospital Lukas Birungi was faulted for being arrogant and diversionary in his response something that angered legislators putting him on oath before handing him over to CID.
