Fufa to Pilot Controversial New League Format in Kampala Regional League
Following resistance from Uganda Premier League clubs and fans, FUFA will test its new split league system with 3rd Division teams in the Kampala Regional League.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) has announced that its new split league format will now be tested in the Kampala Regional League’s 3rd Division clubs.

This decision follows the recent withdrawal of the format from the Uganda Premier League (UPL) after widespread opposition from fans and several clubs, including Vipers, ahead of the 2025/2026 season.

Fufa confirmed that it has reached an agreement with 18 clubs from the Kampala Regional Football Association 3rd Division to pilot the format during the upcoming season.

"The Fufa Executive Committee has agreed with the 18 Kampala Regional Football Association 3rd Division Clubs to implement the split league format for the 2025/26 season," FUFA announced on Tuesday.

As part of the trial, Fufa revealed plans to invest over Shs800 million into the league. The funds will cover prize money, locker-room bonuses, man-of-the-match awards, referees’ fees, financial support, and other operational expenses.

According to Fufa, the league champion will take home up to Shs20 million.

The move marks Fufa’s attempt to refine and test the new format on a smaller scale before considering wider adoption in Uganda’s top football tiers.
