Despite dominating the game at the St.Mary’s stadium, record league champions were not able to go past Vipers SC in the second Uganda Cup semifinals on Tuesday evening.

The Villa Park side will have themselves to blame for a number of chances including one with an empty net only for Mahad ‘Yaya’ Kakooza to tap the ball out of the goal to deny the a chance to storm the finals.

On the other side, Vipers who did not have a good game utilized one of the few chances they had to put the ball at the back of the net.

In the 69th minute, Milton Karisa was brought down for the centre referee to award a free-kick that was well sunk in by second half substitute Brian Nkuubi to earn the hosts the lead and only goal of the game on a chilly Tuesday evening.

However, there was an ugly scene as the Villa players attacked the centre referee accusing him of wrongly awarding the free-kick that resulted into the goal.

SC Villa's Allan Kyambadde rues a missed chance

Speaking shortly after the game, Villa Coach Wasswa Bbosa said his team failed to convert the chances they had created and were later punished.

He also blamed the centre referee, Emma Kiweewa for officiating the game poorly and cost his team.

“We created chances but did not use well. The referee created his own chance and converted it,”Bbosa said in reference to the free-kick awarded to Vipers.

Vipers’ Portuguese tactician Miguel Da Costa admitted the game was not a walkover for his team after finding a hard time going past SC Villa.

Vipers players applaud their supporters after the game

“We only played in the first 20 minutes. We had a lot of possession but it was in our own half. Villa was better than us in the second half,”Da Costa said.

“Because they had the best defence in the league, it was not easy to score against them.”

Vipers will now play with KCCA FC in the Uganda Cup finals to be played at Emokori Playground in Bukedea District on Saturday.
