Everyone has their intention, but our major reason is to plead to the martyrs to pray for us and also spread the Good News of our lord

As Uganda prepares to commemorate the annual Martyrs Day on June 3rd, a group of 30 determined Christian pilgrims from St. Kagwa Parish and Kyamuhunga Parish in Bushenyi has begun their long walk of faith to Namugongo.

The early group, which includes elderly worshippers, a few children, and even a 74-year-old pilgrim, set off on May 12 and reached Mbarara on May 13. Their goal is to arrive in time for the novena prayers ahead of the main celebrations.

“We have been walking to Namugongo for a long time. Personally, this is my 14th time,” shared Kamasanyu Hellen from St. Kagwa Parish.

“Everyone has their intention, but our major reason is to plead to the martyrs to pray for us and also spread the Good News of our lord.”

The journey, which spans hundreds of kilometers, is no easy task. Pilgrims face harsh weather, exhaustion, and physical strain. But for many, the purpose behind the pilgrimage strengthens their resolve.

“It’s not a straight journey, it has its challenges, but we are intentional,” Hellen added.

Bladina Katontori, another pilgrim, emphasised the importance of timing. “We go early to be able to catch up with the novena at the main church,” she said.

"When people see us walk, they are motivated to pray. This is a legacy created and we must maintain" Bladina added

Among the youngest in the group is an 7 year-old child who shared, “I’m walking to pray for my parents to get out of poverty.”

The group has drawn admiration from some and criticism from others who question the wisdom of walking such long distances. Yet their devotion remains unshaken.

While the elderly and children moved ahead to ensure they reach Namugongo in time, another group from the same parishes is set to start their journey in the coming days, joining thousands of other pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond.
