UMSC emphasises social duties beyond religious responsibilities
The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has called on local government officials to support its efforts in fulfilling religious and social responsibilities.
These remarks were made during the handover ceremony for the newly appointed caretaker Kadhi of Apac Muslim District, Sheikh Usama Awongo Eden, held on Monday at the main Akbar Mosque in Akar, Apac Municipal Town.
The event was attended by various Muslim leaders and local government officials.
UMSC Secretary for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Imran Abdunoor Ssali, officiated the ceremony and emphasized the importance of local government support for the Kadhi’s office.
He specifically urged Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Andrew Onyuku and other officials to assist in addressing the community's social and economic needs.
"The Kadhi's office extends beyond religious duties; it plays a crucial role in enhancing the social and economic well-being of local citizens through government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM)," Sheikh Ssali stated.
He also recognised the contributions of outgoing Kadhi Sheikh Shaban Ssanyu, saying, "We acknowledge your invaluable contributions during your tenure in office," highlighting Sheikh Ssanyu's role in guiding the Muslim community in Apac over the years.
Sheikh Ssali urged the new Kadhi to embrace his leadership with humility, wisdom, and a strong sense of responsibility.
"You have inherited a community rich in faith, Muslim culture, and values. I am confident that under your leadership, Apac Muslim District will continue to thrive in unity and peace," he remarked.
In his response, Sheikh Usama Awongo Eden echoed the call for unity and community support, quoting the famous address by Abubakar Swidiq, a companion of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "Oh people, I am not the best among you. Whenever I am on the right path, support me; whenever I go wrong, guide me."
He urged the community to unite under the UMSC and work together for the betterment of the district.
RDC Andrew Onyuku, speaking on behalf of the government, assured the congregation of necessary support for the new Kadhi's office and emphasised the importance of cooperation between local government and the UMSC to ensure a smooth transition.
