For years, many people believed that harsh burn was simply part of the tequila experience. But spirits experts say quality tequila is meant to be savoured, not endured.
Unlike lower-quality alternatives, authentic tequila is produced from 100% Blue Weber agave grown in designated regions of Mexico under strict production standards. Premium tequilas are crafted using mature agave plants, slow cooking, careful fermentation and refined distillation techniques that preserve the natural flavours of the spirit.
The production process plays a significant role in determining the final taste. Slow cooking allows the agave to develop its natural sweetness, while careful fermentation and distillation help create a smoother and more balanced spirit. Some varieties are further matured in oak barrels, adding depth and complexity.
Different styles of tequila also offer distinct flavour profiles. Blanco typically features fresh agave, citrus, herbs and pepper notes, while Reposado develops subtle hints of vanilla and caramel after resting in oak barrels. Añejo introduces richer flavours such as dried fruit, honey and spice, while Extra Añejo, aged for several years, delivers more complex notes of oak, cocoa and toffee.
One producer that follows this approach is Don Julio, whose tequilas are made exclusively from fully matured 100% Blue Weber agave harvested at peak ripeness. The brand says its focus is on patience and balance rather than producing an overly intense spirit.
"The biggest misconception is that tequila is meant to be endured," says Judie Nandekya, senior Brand Manager, Tequila and Rum East Africa. "Authentic tequila is designed to be appreciated. When you slow down, nose the spirit before you sip and allow the flavours to unfold naturally, you discover a depth that surprises even people who thought they didn't like tequila."
Experts also advise changing the way tequila is served. Rather than drinking it quickly with salt and lemon, they recommend serving it neat at cool room temperature or lightly chilled in a tulip-shaped tasting glass that concentrates its aromas. Drinkers are encouraged to swirl the tequila gently, inhale its aromas and take small sips to appreciate its full flavour.
As part of this year's World Tequila Day celebrations, consumers will have an opportunity to experience that approach at the Don Julio Tequila Sundowner taking place on Sunday at Mediterraneo Restaurant in Kololo. Organisers say the event will focus on educating guests about tequila's heritage, production methods and tasting culture, rather than the traditional shot-drinking experience.
The event is expected to bring together tequila enthusiasts and newcomers interested in learning more about one of Mexico's most recognised spirits while sampling different expressions of Don Julio tequila.
