Ugandan music legend Joseph Mayanja, popularly known as Jose Chameleone, traveled to Nairobi on Easter Monday for a routine medical check-up, following recommendations from his doctors in the United States.

The trip marks a key part of his ongoing recovery after a serious illness that saw the artist undergo extended treatment abroad.

Speaking to local media, Chameleone emphasised the importance of regular health assessments, particularly after his recent health scare.

Chameleone, who lost 13 kilograms during his time in the U.S., revealed that his experience prompted a complete lifestyle overhaul.

“The doctors didn’t directly tell me to stop anything, but I made a personal evaluation,” he noted, adding that he has since quit smoking and drinking alcohol in a bid to safeguard his health.

The singer described his near-death experience as a wake-up call and a spiritual turning point.

“This is the second round. God has given me another phase,” he said. “The first one is over; now I’m starting the second.”

Chameleone’s absence from the stage during the usually packed Easter entertainment calendar was explained by his Nairobi trip.

Back home, he recently held an emotional thanksgiving service at Lweza Catholic Church on Entebbe Road, where he recounted how close he came to losing his life.

“It’s a miracle to come back alive to Uganda because I thought my death was near as I couldn’t even walk,” he told attendees, which included family, fellow musicians, and fans.

Despite the health challenges, the celebrated musician remains optimistic about the future.

He announced plans to stage a major concert in August 2025, in collaboration with events promoter Abitex Musinguzi of Abitex Promotions.

During his stay in Kenya where his music career began over two decades ago Chameleone also expressed interest in supporting upcoming artists, offering collaborations to musicians who share his passion.

“It’s time to lift others up… helping others shine doesn’t dim your own light,” he said.
