The second edition of the Sauti Canvas is underway.

The canvas is a talent search and exposure platform that provides opportunities for young people under 30 years with and without disabilities to explore and showcase their natural abilities in art and music.

The Sauti Canvas is centred around the need to break the bias around persons with disabilities. It had its first edition in 2021 under the theme “Focus on Abilities" within three music categories: Hip Hop, Rap, Instrumentalists and Dance.

We spoke to Namoma Simon  one of the runners up from the first edition of the canvas - about his experience:

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Namoma Simon - a Ugandan, Mugishu by tribe and a Christian with a hearing

impairment.

What inspired you to sign up for the first edition of the Sauti Canvas?

I was inspired by Kenneth Mugabi singing while playing an instrument - which gave me the courage to play the keyboard while singing. When my Pastor told me about the Sauti Canvas, I decided to join the platform to show my talent.

Why do you think platforms like this are necessary in Uganda and the world?

Platforms like the Sauti Canvas are necessary because they help young people with talents to get a chance to show off their skills - disability or not - because we are all capable of accomplishing amazing things.

What was the highlight of your experience in the first edition of the Sauti Canvas?

Simply being a part of the first edition was the highlight for me. It showed me that I can do anything.

What advice do you have for young people living with disabilities?

I would like to encourage people living with disabilities that we are all capable of amazing things. Be strong, be patient and stay hopeful because the day to shine will come. Keep on moving.
