Juma Wasswa Balunywa omitted from 2024 MUBs Guild Elections over retakes
Former Principal of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) , Professor Waswa Balunywa, has accused the current principal of the institution, Prof. Moses Muhwezi, of orchestrating the assault and subsequent arrest of his son, Juma Wasswa Balunywa.
As a result, his son was not nominated in the 2024 MUBS Guild Elections on grounds of alleged academic ineligibility, purportedly due to retakes.

“After enduring a prolonged hate campaign against me, Prof. Muhwezi has resorted to having my son beaten and arrested,” he stated without providing further details.
In his bid to vie for the esteemed position of Guild President at MUBS), Balunywa’s son, a guild aspirant, has raised crucial queries regarding the eligibility criteria stipulated by the Electoral Commission (EC) of the institution.
In a formal communication addressed to Magezi David William, the Chairman of the EC, Balunywa pointed out the apparent inconsistency within the guild constitution.
“We are aware that article 50 of the guild constitution stipulates that a candidate should be on normal progress, while article 81 asserts that a candidate should not have any retakes,” he remarked.
However, Balunywa noted instances where candidates with similar circumstances were permitted to contest for the guild presidency.
Referring to the 2008/2009 guild elections, Balunywa cited a ruling by the legal advisor at the time, which clarified that a student must be on normal progress to stand for the guild presidency.
Balunywa maintained that he has met this requirement by successfully addressing a retake and maintaining normal progress in his studies.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the EC's lack of response to his initial letter dated February 15, 2024, Balunywa voiced concerns that the delay in clarification could impede his nomination process and sow uncertainty among students.
Balunywa's correspondence was also forwarded to the Acting Principal, Dean of Students, Guild President, and MUBS students, underscoring his commitment to transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
While awaiting a response from the EC, Balunywa's appeal for clarity on the eligibility criteria emphasizes the imperative of upholding fairness and integrity in student elections at MUBS.
The Nile Post has learned that Balunywa has not been nominated in the 2024 Guild Elections.
The precise reason for his non-nomination remains undisclosed, pending official disclosure.
These developments follow recent rumours alleging his academic ineligibility due to retakes. Balunywa vehemently denies these allegations.
