Education is widely regarded as the cornerstone of community transformation, and the Butansi Elders Forum has taken a bold step to advance that cause by securing land for a new secondary school.
The two-acre parcel, located near Nabirama Health Centre and Primary School, was donated by elder and businessman Kezekia Wagubi, who personally handed it over to the Forum.
“God has blessed me from a humble beginning to some level of success. But what pains me is seeing children’s enthusiasm to study hindered by long distances. Girls, in particular, face many risks,” Wagubi said during the handover ceremony, witnessed by his family.
“This land is my personal property, not inherited, and I am donating it for community development—just as my grandfather did when he gave land for the church.”
Wagubi noted that once constructed, the school will enhance girls’ safety, reduce school dropouts, and inspire parents to value education.
His remarks were met with applause from community members and the Butansi Elders Forum leadership.
Bugabula Chiefdom Minister for Cooperation and Foreign Affairs, Henry Dhikusooka Munaaba, commended the initiative, saying it aligns with the Forum’s vision to make Butansi a model sub-county for education and development.
“In line with our motto, Butansi First and Fast, we shall work to accelerate development that secures the future of our children and protects our girls from the dangers of travelling long distances to school,” Dhikusooka said.
“Let us focus our energies on making Butansi a model sub-county through education and improved household incomes.”
He added that the planned school will provide both academic and practical skills education, fostering moral and holistic development.
Forum Chairperson Pastor Andrew Muwanguzi emphasized that the group’s mission is purely developmental and non-partisan, uniting all sons and daughters of Butansi for a common purpose.
“We are here for one purpose — to develop our home,” Muwanguzi said.
“We want to harness our resources and talents to make Butansi a model community where unity drives progress.”
Ms Monica Mukasa, speaking on behalf of the community, expressed gratitude for the project, saying it would not only improve education but also generate local income and strengthen social cohesion.
“This school will help many girls re-enroll and complete their education. It will also be a symbol of unity and a way for us to give back to our community,” Mukasa said.
