As students nationwide prepare for their national leaving examinations, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is set to introduce new health protocols in response to the recent emergence of mpox.
This move comes amid growing concerns about the disease's potential impact on schools and their environments.
Mr Ismael Mulindwa, director of basic and secondary education and sports, representing the State Minister for Education and Sports, emphasized the urgency of the situation.
He highlighted the need for schools to brace for and mitigate the effects of mpox, noting that the Ministry is working closely with health officials to finalize detailed operating procedures and safety protocols to protect students and staff.
“The current situation with mpox is quite severe,” Mulindwa stated. “It poses a serious health risk, potentially more concerning than previous outbreaks like COVID-19. We are working diligently to ensure that schools are equipped with the necessary guidelines to address and prevent the spread of this disease.”
The new health protocols are expected to be distributed to schools across the country in the coming days, accompanied by a circular that outlines specific measures to be implemented.
These guidelines will provide comprehensive strategies for infection control, including hygiene practices, the use of personal protective equipment, and emergency response plans.
Mulindwa called on educational institutions to be vigilant and proactive in adhering to the new regulations.
“We must prioritise the health and safety of our students as they prepare for their examinations. The upcoming guidelines will be crucial in ensuring a safe examination environment.”
The Ministry is also urging cooperation among all stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and health officials, to maintain a secure and healthy atmosphere as students approach the examination period.
By implementing these protocols, the government aims to curb the spread of mpox and minimize disruptions to the academic calendar.
