Police in Kyankwanzi District are investigating a case of vandalism involving electricity infrastructure where unknown suspects allegedly cut and stole electric wires, leaving six power poles stripped bare and disrupting power supply in the area.
The incident in Kisoodo Village, Kisoodo Parish, Bananywa Sub-county was reported to Bananywa Police Station on June 8, 2026, by the Officer-in-Charge, Corporal Kalisa Vincent, following a report from a resident, Ms Assimwe Rose, who was directly affected by the power disruption.
According to Wamala Region Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects cut and stole approximately 300 metres of electric wire along the Kikonge–Kisoodo Road.
The attackers reportedly vandalised six electricity poles, rendering the line non-functional and cutting off supply to residents who rely on the connection for domestic and small-scale economic activities.
“Vandalism of electricity infrastructure is a serious crime that not only disrupts services but also frustrates government investments aimed at improving the livelihoods of rural communities,” SSP Kigozi said.
Police said officers visited and documented the scene as investigations commenced, with detectives from Kyankwanzi working alongside intelligence agencies to track down the suspects.
Authorities said several leads are being pursued, and appealed to the public to provide any information that could assist in identifying those responsible.
“We are following several leads that we believe will help us identify and arrest those responsible for this act,” SSP Kigozi said, urging residents to report individuals dealing in electric wires, transformer parts, or other suspected stolen electricity equipment.
Security officials expressed concern over the rising cases of vandalism targeting public infrastructure, warning that such acts undermine government efforts to expand rural electrification and impose additional costs on both the state and communities.
They further noted that tampering with electricity infrastructure is a criminal offence under the Electricity Transmission (Amendment) Act, 2022, and warned that offenders will face prosecution.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as security agencies intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
