Kayunga Residents Accuse Police of Releasing ‘Bijambiya’ Suspect

By | April 14, 2026

Residents of Busaana Sub-county in Kayunga District have expressed outrage over what they describe as questionable police conduct following the alleged release of a suspected “bijambiya” (panga-wielding criminal), raising concerns about public safety and accountability.

The concerns emerged during a community policing engagement at Busaana Trading Centre, where residents confronted officers, claiming that the suspect was among a group of 13 individuals apprehended by the community in connection with a series of attacks and robberies in Busaana and Kitimbwa sub-counties.

According to locals, the suspects were handed over to police with the expectation that due process would follow.

However, they later discovered that one of the suspects was allegedly missing from custody.

The reported development has sparked anger and fear among residents, some of whom linked the suspect to previous violent incidents in the area in which at least five people were attacked and one killed.

Many community members have since accused law enforcement of negligence or possible corruption, arguing that such actions undermine efforts to combat crime and discourage public cooperation with security agencies.

Local leaders have called for a thorough investigation into the matter, demanding clarity on the circumstances under which the suspect was allegedly released and whether proper procedures were followed.

They have also urged police leadership to strengthen transparency and rebuild public trust.

However, Kayunga District Police Commander Hussein Mugarura dismissed the allegations, maintaining that the suspect remains in police custody.

He called on residents to remain vigilant, work closely with security agencies, and promptly report criminal activity.

Despite the denial, some residents insist on further explanation, citing claims from local sources that the alleged release could be linked to corrupt practices within the force.

The incident underscores growing tensions between communities and security agencies, with renewed calls for accountability, improved communication, and stronger collaboration to ensure justice and public safety.
