Authorities in Nebbi District have launched a criminal investigation into an illegal meat slaughter and distribution ring that defied a quarantine imposed in February 2025 to curb the spread of livestock disease.
The operation came to light on the morning of Saturday, May 3, when authorities raided two locations—Oryang Cell and Arumkeng Cell in Nebbi Town—where illicit slaughtering was underway.
The ongoing quarantine prohibits all meat-related trade, slaughter, and processing across the district.
Four suspects were caught in the act and found with a substantial quantity of freshly slaughtered meat.
They were promptly arrested and taken to Nebbi Central Police Station for further questioning.

Veterinary officers summoned to the scene examined the seized meat and declared it fit for human consumption.
Acting on their advice, authorities stored the meat securely and later handed it over to local charities.
While the meat was not deemed hazardous, authorities said the illegal slaughter remains a grave offence under national animal health and public safety regulations.
The Nebbi District leadership has since reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the quarantine and urged residents to report any suspicious slaughter or meat sales.
