A recent traffic report from the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety revealed alarming statistics as road accidents claimed 61 lives and left 255 injured between November 18 and 23, 2024.
Pedestrians, who accounted for 52% of fatalities, were most affected by crashes, with motorcyclists following at 37%. Careless overtaking, speeding, and hit-and-run accidents were identified as the leading causes of these crashes.
In a particularly tragic incident on November 24, two pupils were killed and five injured when a reversing Isuzu vehicle hit them in Nansana, adding to the growing concerns about pedestrian safety.
This incident follows a disturbing trend noted in the half-year report, which revealed that 33% of all road fatalities involved pedestrians.
Superintendent Michael Kananura PRO of the Traffic Police emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits, respecting pedestrian zones, and maintaining vehicles in good condition.
Enforcement actions are being stepped up, including impounding vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions and arresting riders without licenses.
As the festive season approaches, authorities are intensifying efforts to raise awareness and improve road safety, particularly for children during school holidays.
