A Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier who ran amok and opened fire at colleagues was shot dead on Monday morning.
Private Isaac Lukwang, of the 5th Mountain Battalion, was shot dead by fellow soldiers after he opened fire during an attempt to disarm him.
The altercation followed the alleged murder of another soldier, Private Solomon Kule, from whom Lukwang had taken a weapon.
Reports indicate that Lukwang, based in Rusese, Kasese District, entered a colleague's house, seized a firearm, and began shooting indiscriminately, injuring Private Joel Alebu in the process.
After the initial shooting, Lukwang fled, prompting a search for him. Around 4:00 AM on November 4, he resurfaced at a UPDF border detachment in Kamukumbi, where he shot and killed sentry Pte Kule, seizing his weapon.
The UPDF intensified their hunt for the rogue soldier. Later that evening, a squad was dispatched to disarm him, but Lukwang retaliated, resulting in him being shot and killed.
In the aftermath, two firearms were recovered from Lukwang, and they are now secured by the UPDF.
The Mountain Division has announced plans to establish a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.
