Truck stolen from Kampala recovered in DRC
Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga.

Police have recovered in Democratic Republic of Congo, a truck which was stolen from Kampala.

The Isuzu truck  registration number UBH 638T had been stolen from Kira division in Kampala on June 13  before it was  driven up to the north eastern part of DRC via West Nile

“Because of the joint cross body initiatives in West Nile and the north eastern region of DRC, we were able to coordinate efforts to recover the truck. We furnished intelligence to our counterparts and they intercepted and impounded the truck,” police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said.

He said three suspects including Bohorad Ssentongo, Samuel Aikan and Innocent Suleiman were consequently arrested by DRC authorities.

Enanga however said the suspects were not handed over to Uganda  due to jurisdictional limitations and they will be charged under DRC laws.

“We are carrying out verification of ownership before we hand it over to the owner.”

A number of items stolen from Kampala including vehicles, motorcycles and mobile phones are sold to the neighbouring DRC via the West Nile due to the proximity of the two areas.

Items sold to DRC are also not easy to recover and return to Uganda.

Security has also in the past said it is easier for items to end up in DRC since there is a ready market and it is not easy for Ugandan security to follow up and recover the stolen items from eastern DRC.

For example, in 2021, a Ministry of Health ambulance, a Toyota Land Cruiser registration number UG6812M was stolen from the Arua regional referral hospital and sold for shs120 million in DRC.

Whereas the suspects behind the racket were arrested, the ambulance couldn’t return as the one who had bought it demanded for a lot of money so as to release it.
