The initiative forms part of NCBA Bank Uganda's sustainability strategy, which aims to plant 100,000 trees across Uganda by 2030 through partnerships, community engagement and environmental conservation programmes.

Speaking during the event, Martin Mwanje, the bank's Head of Strategy and Sustainability, said the tree-planting exercise reflects the institution's commitment to addressing environmental challenges while creating long-term value for communities.

"Today's activity reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship, community impact, and employee engagement. It demonstrates how businesses can play a meaningful role in addressing climate challenges while creating lasting value for communities," Mwanje said.

He explained that the initiative is aligned with the bank's 2026–2030 Sustainability Strategy and its "Change the Story" campaign, which seeks to encourage environmental responsibility among employees and communities.

According to Mwanje, the immediate target is to plant 500 trees at Nakasero Primary School and support the development of a grass field that pupils can use for recreation and outdoor activities.

“As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, our immediate objective is to plant 500 trees at Nakasero Primary School and support the establishment of a grass field that pupils can use during their recreational time,” he said.

Beyond beautifying the school environment, the project is expected to improve air quality, enhance climate resilience and promote environmental awareness among learners.

World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 and serves as the United Nations' flagship platform for environmental advocacy and action. The 2026 celebrations are being held under the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” emphasizing the importance of nature-based solutions in addressing climate change.

This year's global celebrations were hosted in Baku, while Uganda's national commemorations took place in Adjumani District.

For NCBA Bank Uganda, the activities at Nakasero Primary School represent more than a symbolic observance. They underscore the bank's growing focus on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and its commitment to delivering lasting environmental and social impact in the communities where it operates.

The initiative also highlights the increasing role of the private sector in supporting Uganda's climate action goals through tree planting, environmental education and sustainable community development programmes.
