MTN Mobile Money Uganda and Stabex International have rolled out a boda boda fuel incentive scheme aimed at expanding MoMoPay adoption, rewarding riders for digital transactions while advancing Uganda’s shift toward cashless everyday payments.

MTN Mobile Money Uganda Limited, in partnership with Stabex International Limited, has launched a new fuel incentive campaign targeting boda boda riders in a bid to accelerate the adoption of MoMoPay merchant services across Uganda.

The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Stabex headquarters in Nansana, is designed to integrate digital payments into the daily operations of Uganda’s estimated one million boda boda riders, many of whom operate in urban and peri-urban areas.

The campaign encourages riders to register as MoMoPay merchants and accept mobile payments for rides. Those who meet simple daily transaction thresholds will receive fuel rewards redeemable at selected Stabex fuel stations.

MTN MoMo said the initiative is part of its wider “Power of MoMo” drive, which seeks to normalise cashless payments for everyday transactions, particularly low-value exchanges such as transport fares.

The programme also supports free transactions for payments below Shs5,000.

“We are placing boda boda riders at the centre of Uganda’s digital payments journey,” said Jemima Kairuki, Chief Product Officer at MTN Mobile Money Uganda Limited.

“These riders interact with customers every day and influence how money moves in real time. With MoMoPay, they have a simple and reliable way to receive payments, and through this partnership with Stabex, they also gain direct value in the form of fuel support.”

She added that riders can register easily by dialling 16517#, after which they receive a merchant code linked to their MoMo account.

Once onboarded, they can receive payments at no cost and access their funds through MTN’s mobile money ecosystem.

To qualify for the daily fuel reward, riders must receive at least four MoMoPay transactions in a single day, each worth Shs20,000 or more and from different customers.

Those who meet the requirement receive Shs500 in fuel credit, redeemable the following day at participating Stabex stations when fueling with MTN MoMo.

The reward is issued daily and cannot be accumulated.

Stabex International Uganda said the partnership is intended to ease operational pressures on riders while promoting cashless fuel and payment systems.

“This partnership with MTN MoMo makes it easier for boda boda riders to fuel and pay in a simple, cashless way,” said Boniface Kipchirchir, head of operations at Stabex International Uganda. “At a time when fuel prices can fluctuate, initiatives like this help ease the daily burden and support riders to keep moving.”

Under the scheme, riders also benefit from free registration, zero charges for receiving MoMoPay payments, and flexible access to their funds via mobile wallets or agent networks.

Customers paying for rides are expected to benefit from a smoother payment experience, with minimal transaction fees and free payments for amounts below Shs5,000.

Mbidde Ashraf Jaja, a leader within the Jjajja Boda community, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a practical support system for riders while encouraging wider adoption of digital payments within the transport sector.

The campaign comes as MTN MoMo continues to expand its financial inclusion agenda, leveraging mobile money to deepen digital transaction usage across informal sectors that dominate Uganda’s economy.

About MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited said it serves over 14.7 million customers in Uganda, offering services including person-to-person transfers, bill payments, savings, loans, insurance products and merchant payments.

MTN Uganda, which operates in all 134 districts, reported 23.5 million subscribers as of September 2025, alongside 14.2 million mobile money users and over 11 million active data users.

The company said the partnership with Stabex reflects a broader push to make digital payments a default choice for everyday transactions while strengthening Uganda’s cashless economy.
