Officials have said the Tilenga Project, a flagship oil and gas initiative led by TotalEnergies EP Uganda has continued to deliver significant employment opportunities for Ugandan nationals.
At the Q1 Supplier Development Workshop, held on Friday , Ms Mariam Nampeera Mbowa, the Deputy General Manager of TotalEnergies EP Uganda, revealed the latest employment figures, highlighting the impact of local hiring and economic inclusion.
According to Ms Nampeera, over 11,100 Ugandans have secured jobs within TotalEnergies, Tier 1 contractors, and subcontractors, making up 91% of the total workforce.
"National content is fundamental to our operations. We are proud to provide employment opportunities to 64% management staff, 86% technical experts, and 99% other staff engaged in meaningful work, the Deputy GM stated.
In addition to direct employment, the local communities in Buliisa, Nwoya, Pakwach, Hoima, Masindi, and Kikuube have benefited immensely, with 3,880 community members currently engaged in skilled and semi-skilled roles.
The Tilenga Project is now entering its peak construction phase, and TotalEnergies EP Uganda expects even more Ugandans to be mobilized as development progresses.
This commitment aligns with the Petroleum Authority of Uganda’s national content regulations, which prioritize Ugandan participation in oil and gas projects through workforce development and supplier engagements.
Nampeera Mbowa, emphasized the challenges Ugandan suppliers face, such as bid management, regulatory compliance, financial constraints, and contract execution.
Nampeera noted that TotalEnergies EP Uganda has implemented a string of initiatives to help Ugandans bridge these gap.
She pointed out the Industry Enhancement Center, a resource hub that the company has established in Kampala for suppliers.
She also highlighted the Community Supplier Development Program, aimed at mentoring local businesses, as well as the regular training workshops that are held for contractors to improve knowledge, oil and gas expertise, and technical skills.
"We are building a strong foundation for Ugandan firms to not only participate in Tilenga but also future projects in the industry," she added.
With 280 local companies already active on the project in both specialist and non-specialist roles, and USD 739 million worth of national content investments, TotalEnergies EP Uganda is ensuring the oil and gas sector translates into real economic benefits for the Ugandan people.
