Leading telecommunication company, MTN Uganda has joined forces with Sense International to inaugurate a state-of-the-art IT resource centre at Ngora School for the Deaf.
The historic occasion saw the centre being officially commissioned by Onapito Ekomoloit who represented the CEO of MTN .
Ekomoloit expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the company's commitment to corporate social responsibility and inclusivity.
"We believe in the transformative power of technology, and it is our privilege to contribute to the education and empowerment of these young minds. This IT resource center is a step towards a more inclusive and digitally connected future."
He said the project which cost of shs124 million and represents a significant investment in providing technological resources and educational opportunities for the 99 pupils enrolled at Ngora School for the Deaf.
He said the primary objective of the ICT resource centre is to bridge the digital gap and enhance the learning experience for students with hearing impairments.
"We want to help young learners access information to empower them gain skills and also improve their lives. “
Edward Otim the country director, Sense International said they have also given more support in form of hearing aid to pupils with hearing impairment.
He noted disabilities are not the same and that those with hearing impairments are unique and need support.
Local leaders in the area welcomed support and pledged to guard it jealously for the learners.
The centre is equipped with 10 computers, strategically chosen to cater to the specific needs of the students.
This development is expected to empower the pupils by providing them with valuable digital skills and fostering an environment conducive to inclusive education.
John Michael Ekadit the head teacher of the school said the school is grappling with a lot of challenges including inadequate sign language teachers.
Gerald Othieno an official from the Ministry of Education said every child needs to get acquainted with IT, noting that during Covid, Ugandans who were not compliant with technology were most hit .
The collaboration between MTN and Sense International underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing the unique needs of marginalized communities.
The resource center not only symbolizes technological progress but also serves as a beacon of hope for students at Ngora School for the Deaf, opening doors to a world of opportunities.
