Chinese firm, Sinohydro Corporation Limited has handed over Nalubaale Hydro Power Dam to Eskom Uganda Ltd after almost a year of refurbishment.

The Shs 11.6 billion project was undertaken to repair the leakage on the main dam due to deterioration of grout curtain leading to water seepage through the dam structure.

Officiating at project handover, Thozama Gangi, the managing director Eskom Uganda, said the refurbishment was done to increase the structural and functional integrity of the dam by reducing water leakages courtesy of the cracks which developed over time.

"By carrying out a successful project, we have made more progress towards curing the cracks that would have affected the power station. I thank the project team for doing an amazing work," Gangi said.

The power generators are optimistic that the Nalubaale Power Dam which was last refurbished in 1999 shall last for more than 20 years.

However the dam still faces a challenge of high water levels in Lake Victoria which has kept the technical team there.

Constructed in 1954, Nalubaale hydro power Dam formerly known as Owen Falls Dam is Uganda's oldest power plant with a generation capacity of180 megawatts.
