Kabale District leaders have officially launched a new livestock market in Katuna Town Council as part of efforts to boost local revenue collection and tap into the growing livestock trade in the region.
The market, inaugurated on Wednesday, is located in Kamuganguzi and Nyamengo villages, Kiniogo Ward, Katuna Town Council in Kabale District.
Presiding over the launch, Kabale District Chairperson Denis Nzeirwe Ndyomugyenyi said his long-term vision is to transform the market into a regional livestock trading hub.
“The district market will provide a structured trading space for cattle, goats, and sheep farmers while increasing revenue for local government,” Ndyomugyenyi said.
District officials said the facility is equipped with holding pens for cattle, goats and sheep, loading ramps, water points, a veterinary office, and revenue collection points to streamline operations and improve animal health oversight.
Traders and farmers welcomed the development, saying it will help end roadside selling and reduce losses often caused by poor handling and lack of structured trading facilities.
The new market is expected to strengthen formal livestock trade in Kabale District and improve coordination between farmers, traders, and veterinary services.
