Govt takes steps to check illegal fish imports from South Sudan

The State minister for Fisheries, Hellen Adoa, has launched a crackdown on illegal import of fish from South Sudan and fortified border controls.

Expressing profound concern for local fish sellers grappling to stay afloat amidst stiff competition, Minister Adoa underlined the pressing need to regulate the inflow of foreign fish products.

This follows the alarming surge of fish imports inundating Uganda's local market through the Sudan border,

Several incidents of unlawful imports have already surfaced, prompting swift action from authorities.

"We cannot stand idly by as our domestic fish remains unsold while foreign imports flood our markets," Odoa said.

The minister said efforts are underway to bolster regulations and foster collaboration with South Sudanese counterparts to tackle the issue at its root.

Through joint efforts, both nations aspire to stem the tide of illicit fish imports and thwart the infiltration of unauthorized fishing gear, including illegal nets.

"As we refine our regulations, we are actively engaging our counterparts across the border to facilitate effective regulation," Odoa said.

"Our inspectors are stationed at the border points to enforce compliance."

The minister's stance highlights a firm commitment to safeguarding Uganda's fisheries sector and ensuring a level playing field for local fish producers.
