WORLD CUP: Nigeria revives Africa's hopes with win over Iceland

Nigeria bounced back from their opening-game defeat to beat Iceland and brighten their chances of playing in the next round of the world’s most coveted football tournament in Russia.

Going into the Friday game in Volgograd, the Super Eagles did not have a single point and were languishing at the bottom of group D.

However, a brace by the impressive Ahmed Musa ensured Nigeria not only won their first game in Russia but also revive the African hopes at the 2018 World Cup.

The Leicester City FC player controlled a cross by Chelsea’s Victor Moses to fire home for the opener from 10 yards in the 49th minute and was at it again in the 75th minute with a second one for the Super Eagles.

Iceland will have themselves to blame for missing a number of chances they created throughout the game.

Nigeria is now second in Group D with three points, the same number below leaders Croatia who have already qualified to the next round.

The African representatives who started on a slow note in their opening game will now play two time champions Argentina in a do or die game.

A win for Nigeria in their final group game will guarantee their automatic qualification to the next round whereas the South American giants want nothing less than three points from the game to be somewhere near qualification as well as pray that Croatia defeat Iceland.

Should Iceland fail to beat Croatia in their final match, a draw or better for Nigeria will be enough for them to progress to the next round.
