Accountants Push for More Professionals to Improve Public Services in Uganda

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) is calling for more graduates to become certified accountants. This push aims to improve public financial management (PFM) in the country, ultimately leading to better service delivery.

CPA Ronald Mutumba, Vice President of ICPAU, expressed concern over the low number of professional accountants despite their vital role in the economy. The 2nd Public Finance Management Conference addressed this issue by bringing together accountants from across Uganda to discuss strengthening financial discipline.

The conference aims to develop recommendations that will influence national policy development and improve service delivery. Several key points were emphasized:

• Effective PFM, bolstered by a stronger accounting profession, can significantly improve service delivery.
• Accountants can play a crucial role in the African Free Trade Area by addressing infrastructure and communication gaps.
• Building trust and fighting corruption, major roadblocks to service delivery, is essential for progress.

This conference highlights Uganda's ongoing struggle with poor service delivery. The hope is that a stronger accounting profession can be part of the solution.
