Katikkiro Mayiga Urges Youths to Shun Immorarity

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged young people in the kingdom to distance themselves from immoral behavior, warning that the growing trend of reckless lifestyles among youth is fueling poverty and the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

Speaking at Bulange, Mengo, during the swearing-in ceremony of the new leadership of Nkobazambogo—a Buganda students’ association—Mayiga expressed concern over young men who deliberately pursue older women for financial gain, as well as other irresponsible relationships that undermine moral values.

“Immorality is destroying our youth. Some of our young people are marrying women much older than them in search of quick money. This has worsened poverty and continues to spread diseases. I call upon you to live responsibly, maintain discipline, and focus on innovation and creativity, which are the true paths to development,” the Katikkiro said.

The event attracted student leaders from higher institutions of learning, members of the Buganda Youth Council led by chairperson Derrick Kavuma, as well as ministers in Kabaka’s government, including Robert Serwanga, the minister in charge of youth, and other officials responsible for sports and culture.

Kavuma encouraged young people to remain steadfast in promoting Buganda’s values and to protect the Kabaka’s throne (Namulondo).

“Youth must be at the frontline in fighting social vices that are destroying our generation. We must defend the values of the kingdom and safeguard our future,” he said.

Outgoing Nkobazambogo president Adrian Lubyaayi presented his handover report to the Katikkiro, highlighting the achievements of his tenure and calling for more youth to join the association as a platform for service to the Kabaka and Buganda.

The newly elected leadership, led by president Ssemujju Moses Mwanje and his deputy Jovia Nakimulo, pledged their loyalty to the Kabaka and promised to serve the youth diligently.

“We are committed to strengthening the voice of young people in Buganda and working to advance the Kabaka’s vision,” Mwanje affirmed.

Katikkiro Mayiga urged the youth to resist temptations of materialism and immorality, and instead channel their energy into innovation, creativity, and patriotism.

He emphasized that the future of Buganda depends on disciplined, focused, and innovative young people.
