Rev Fr Marvin Lukyamuzi has called on Ugandans to uphold good morals and shun immoral behaviour, saying strong values and integrity are essential in addressing the challenges facing the country.
Fr Lukyamuzi made the remarks during a requiem Mass held at Lubaga Cathedral for journalist Joseph Mary Sseruwooza, who recently passed away.
“Ugandans should embrace good morals and shun actions that are contrary to society’s values. It is through good conduct that we can overcome the challenges affecting our nation,” he said.
The Mass attracted journalists from various media houses, politicians led by Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi, family members, relatives and friends of the deceased.
In his homily, Fr Lukyamuzi comforted the bereaved family and the journalism fraternity, describing Sseruwooza as a dedicated and selfless professional whose contribution to society would be greatly missed.
“Joseph Mary Sseruwooza was committed to his work and served with dedication. His absence will be deeply felt by those who worked with him and the wider community,” he said.
The priest cautioned Ugandans against becoming consumed by worldly pursuits at the expense of moral values, urging citizens to live responsible and upright lives.
“People should not focus only on worldly gains but should strive to live meaningful lives guided by integrity and respect for others,” he added.
Several political leaders, including Joel Ssenyonyi and Wakiso District Woman MP Betty Ethel Naluyima, paid tribute to Sseruwooza, describing him as a hardworking journalist who remained committed to informing the public with factual news throughout his career.
Ssenyonyi called on Ugandans to treat one another with dignity and avoid intimidation and actions that undermine peaceful coexistence.
“We should all promote good conduct and respect for one another. As leaders, we must remain committed to truth and justice on issues affecting our country,” Ssenyonyi said.
Representatives of the media organisation where Sseruwooza worked, led by Steven Dustan Busulwa, said they were deeply saddened by the loss of a colleague whose contribution to journalism had left a lasting impact.
“We have lost a dedicated colleague and friend. His contribution to the profession leaves a gap that will not be easy to fill,” Busulwa said.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Kato Mufumbiro thanked mourners for their support during the difficult period of grief.
“We are grateful to everyone who has supported us and stood with the family during this painful time,” Mufumbiro said.
Following the Mass, Sseruwooza’s body was transported to Lwamaggwa in Kooki County, Rakai District, where he will be laid to rest. He is survived by a widow and two children.
